Another Amazing Use of Platinum and Rhodium

Did you know that one of the world’s largest industrial consumers of platinum (Pt) and rhodium (Rh) is the fiberglass industry?
Most people associate these metals with automotive catalysts or jewelry, but their role in manufacturing high-performance glass fibers is equally fascinating.
At the heart of the process are Pt-Rh alloy bushings—precision components containing hundreds or even thousands of tiny nozzles. Molten glass, at temperatures approaching 1,200–1,400°C, flows through these nozzles to produce continuous glass filaments with extremely consistent diameters.
Why use platinum and rhodium?

✅ Excellent high-temperature strength, allowing operation for years under severe conditions.

✅ Dimensional stability, ensuring every filament maintains consistent quality.

✅ Long service life, despite continuous thermal cycling.

A typical bushing can contain several kilograms of precious metals, making it one of the most valuable pieces of equipment in the production line. Consequently, end-of-life bushings, repair scrap, and production residues represent significant recycling opportunities.
From a recycling perspective, the challenge is not only recovering the platinum and rhodium but also understanding the manufacturing process. Many valuable materials—used bushings, drip glass, cleaning residues, and maintenance scrap—can contain recoverable precious metals if they are properly identified and segregated.
This is another reminder that in the precious metals business, value is often hidden inside industrial processes rather than in obvious materials. Understanding how an industry uses precious metals is the first step toward designing an efficient and profitable recycling strategy.
