Basic Facts About Oxygen Sensors
A modern car will have 2-4 sensors located at key points in the exhaust system. Measuring the oxygen content at these points and transferring the findings to the vehicle’s computer (ECM), will enable control of the level of injection into the intake air stream.
When O2 sensors fail to provide accurate information, the driver may experience an increase in fuel consumption, drivability problems and emission failure.
Cars made since 1996, are required to have a second oxygen sensor that is located below the catalytic converter and enables measuring the efficiency of the catalytic converter.
With the advancements made in 8 generations of O2 sensors, there has been a constant decrease in PGM content (mostly platinum) in the sensors.
New sensors cost between $100-$300 and the cost of recycling is only a few dollars.
As catalytic converters recyclers, this could create an additional revenue stream either by selling as scrap or as a used part for a much higher price.
